JAPAN: An island country in the Far East with a population of over 120 million. Japan began to develop much later than its neighbor, CHINA, and borrowed much of its culture and religion from the Chinese. At the same time, it modified much that it borrowed so that it became distinctly Japanese. Many different styles of martial arts developed in Japan, including JUJUTSU, JUDO, AIKIDO, KENDO, and IAI-DO. KARATE also became popular in Japan after it was introduced there from the neighboring island of OKINAWA in the early twentieth century. (See also Japan article).
